STANDARDS OF ACADEMIC HONESTY

Purpose of this present standard is to provide Georgian National University (SEU) with the establishment of academic honesty, plagiarism prevention in studying and research in the educational and scientific research.

With a establishment of the high academic standards of scientific work by the standards of the academic honesty, the university confirms that it has acknowledged, that implementation of the academic and scientific research process atand the Disciplinary Liability Code, the Universal Grant Competition Rules and other relevant norms,  create the academic honesty protection system of the  Georgian National University ( SEU). 


PLAGIARISM CONTROL POLICY

Politics of the University Plagiarism control is directed to:

  • The establishment of the effective mechanisms for detection and prevention of plagiarism,
  • To ensure the completion of the academic honesty in any university research or research activities in compliance with high standards.
  • The University reserves the right to raise the public awareness  in order to change the approaches established towards the plagiarism,  to the guarantor of the protection of academic standard in the process of educational and research, conducted within the university or on its behalf, as well as to react to the violation in accordance with the established rules and the applicable legislation.


MEASURES TO ENSURE ACADEMIC HONESTY

The university measures for providing academic honesty, are:

  • Creating a unified electronic database of academic papers,
  • Creating a unified electronic database of bachelor's and master's papers
  • Providing transparency and publicity of assessment of academic and student work
  • Conducting information meetings to raise awareness about plagiarism
  • Development of the Plagiarism Management System.

 

DEFINITION OF PLAGIARISM

Academic plagiarism is considered to be intentional misappropriation of other's work, in whole or in part, as his or her own use, or its attempt, in particular:

  • Misappropriation of the intellectual work of another person;
  • Presentation of another person's work or  its part on his / her behalf;
  • Use of someone else's work without  required citation;
  • Sketching quotes word for word  of  someone else's work  in the presented text, changing of word or sentence, without change of the content,
  • Drawing conclusions from someone's work without reference to the source.

Student plagiarism is considered to be intentional misappropriation of another's work, in whole or in part, to use it as its own property, in particular:

  • Misappropriation of the intellectual work of someone intentionally by the student
  • Presentation of another person's work or part thereof on his behalf
  • Using someone else's work without citation needed
  • The sketching quotation  word for word by someone else's work in the presented text,  changing of a  word or a  sentence, without changing the content;
  • Drawing conclusions from someone's work without reference to the source.

Depending on the specific assignment, the processing of the sources and quotation requirements may be specified.

 

The minimum number of permissible limit of the original text

This article sets out the minimum number of permissible limit of the original text (quotations, paragraphs and other sources of text) in student or scientific research work:

 

The minimum number of permissible limit of the original text for the student’s work is:

  • For bachelor's work, for the presentation,  for the project - 50%
  • For the student’s  article / essay / conference work - 75%
  • For the Master's thesis/project - 75%

Student's work that does not meet the requirements of this article shall not be allowed for the assessment.

For scientific works, the minimum number of permissible limit of the original text is:

  • For scientific article, - 85%
  • For the scientific grant - 95%

Scientific research work that does not meet the requirements of this article shall not be allowed in the relevant research project.

Overcoming this limit noted above, does not exclude the University from giving the favor to the works that contain the most original text from papers with the allowable number of the original text. 

 

THE RULE DETECTING PLAGIARISM AND RESPONSE PROCEDURES

Anti-plagiarism control in the university is carried out by the plagiarism detecting electronic program – TurnItIn. The supervisor of the relevant work, checks the anti-plagiarism, through the personal profile of the electronic program.

In the case of detecting plagiarism, student work is not accepted.

The University may, on the basis of the recommendation of the supervisor, is entitled to take measures under the Student’s Ethics and Disciplinary Liability Code towards the person that violated the norms of the academic honesty. 

The examination of the academic personnel and other scientific papers on anti-plagiarism is examined by the University Research Development Service.

In the case of plagiarism, research work is dissolved from the relevant project.

The University, based on the submission of the Service, is authorized to conduct envisaged measures under the Code of Ethics and Disciplinary Liability Code towards the academic staff who violated academic norms.
 

The results of the inspection of an examination on anti-plagiarism will be notified to the author of the examined work.
