Georgian National University SEU announces a scientific grant competition for the academic personnel.

The grant competition scope, aims and priorities:

  • Research or/and preparatory grants for the research development
  • Initiation of scientific-research and innovative projects,  generation and development of the new ideas, creating innovative proposals and developing a concept;
  • Initiation of a pilot scientific research projects,  to successfully find external research grants in the near future;
  • Planning and development of collaborative-scientific projects together with public and private sector practitioners in collaboration with creative industries.

Supporting grants for scientific research activities:

  • Scientific development activities, including short-term scientific visits to other universities or research institutes in Georgia or abroad. Also, the implementation of joint programmes together with partner higher education and research institutes so-called industrial fellowships;
  • Dissemination of research results, financing / co-financing the publication of journals and monographs as well as conducting the research skills training courses in order to increase the capacity of researchers.
  • Attending scientific events, conducting training sessions, and seminars aimed at improving skills in successful project application preparation, in grant management, and in management reporting;
  • Preparation of intellectual property results, presumable patenting and commercialization of the results;
  • Dissemination of the research results through active participation in national and international scientific conferences.

Information regarding the grant contest conditions:

  • Only an affiliate professor of SEU can hold the position of the project manager.
  • The project team may include affiliate, academic, and visiting personnel, as well as it may include SEU master's degree students and external experts.
  • External experts involved in the project may be invited from abroad, as well as either from the other Georgian universities or from the research institutes, both in the private and public institutions such as governmental or civil sectors. It is estimated that only 20% of the research
    team representatives receiving research grants were external experts or external staff.
  • The grant application and research should be in line with the university's core educational directions together with the priorities of higher education development.
  • The research project should be accomplished and its results should be published on behalf of the university, as a  joint project using the title of the university.
  • The content of the research should be an innovation for the Georgian educational system and it should not repeat the content of the already created research/publications.
  • It is essential to use relevant sources and research methods relevant to modern scientific advances in research. 
  • If necessary, before submitting the application the grant applicant must be agreed with the respective owners of the copyright and the related right to the use of sources containing these rights. 
  • Standards of the university's professional ethics and academic honesty apply to all project participants from the submission of a grant application to the completion of the research.


Budget, duration, deadlines and types of expenses:

  • Budget for the research and/or research development grants: The maximum annual budget of each project is 30 000 GEL.
  • Grant proposal budget for the scientific research activities: The maximum annual budget of each project is 5 000 GEL.
  • Duration: The estimated duration of the project is 3 years.
  • Terms: The project implementation must start on February 1, 2021, and end no later than December 31, 2023. 
  • Expenses: The following expenses may be required: Employee expenses - emolument, travel and household expenses, administrative and laboratory equipment, printing,  project promotion, and other necessary services.

Grant applications submission dates and deadlines:

  • Grant applications will be accepted from November 19 to December 7, 2020.
  • The grant application must be submitted in the special forms established by the University, which meets the following criteria:
  • Project basis and justification: description of the current state in the field of research, review of the past and current activities, review of the additional projects and the similar projects implemented locally; 
  • Project Impact: Impact on community challenges and relevant field, target groups and their needs, promotion, and dissemination of the project results;
  • Project work plan: activity description, expected activities and results, the expertise of the team members, required infrastructure and its availability, project risks and  effective risk mitigation measures;

Budget proposal with the justification of expenses: 

  • Possible sources of funding and possible assistance from the other sources;
  • Autobiographies of the research team members (with publications).

The grant application will be considered with the involvement of the relevant commission within 15 days after the application submission deadline.

The results of the contest will be published on the SEU website after the expiration of the deadlines.
