Elizabeth Orbeliani Prize for Georgian Student Translation

In honor of Elisabeth Orbeliani, one of the founders and the first female lecturer of Tbilisi State University, philanthropist, poet and translator and the hostess of the Orbeliani Palace, the President of Georgia establishes the Elizabeth Orbeliani Prize for the best Georgian student translation.

The competition aims to popularize translation work among young people and to encourage their creative initiatives.


The Elizabeth Orbeliani Prize will be given in two nominations:

  • For Georgian translation of a work of prose;
  • For Georgian translation of a scientific paper.


Terms of the competition:

  • Students of Georgian universities are able to participate in the competition;
  • Georgian translation of the same work should not be published by another translator, while submitting a competition paper;
  • To participate in the competition, students must submit the relevant documents and the piece of competition translation to their university chancellery.


Stages of the competition:

  • At a university that wishes to participate in a competition, a commission should be set up by order of the rector to review the papers of students from the same university, to identify the best in each of the two nominations and to submit them to the Presidential Administration;
  • A working group will be set up in the Presidential Administration to identify one candidate for awarding both nominations from the translations received from the universities and to submit its decision to the President of Georgia for approval;
  • The President of Georgia will make a decision on awarding the nominated candidates.


Deadlines of the competition:

The date of announcing the competition: December 29, 2021.

  • Students are welcome to submit their competition translations, including the originals (in any form) and documents (copy of ID card) to the university chancellery between February 7-18, 2022;
  • The competition entries will be submitted to the commission set up at the university on February 21, 2022;
  • Competitive entries will be submitted to the Presidential Administration on March 14, 2022;
  • A working group set up in the Presidential Administration will identify the best translations and submit them to the President of Georgia for a final decision on April 14, 2022;
  • The award ceremony will be held on April 23 at the Orbeliani Palace.
