Winning research projects in the grant competition

03 თებერვალი, 2021

The winning projects in the scientific grant competition announced by Georgian National University SEU to the university academic staff are:

  • Peculiarities of pathogenesis of vasomotor rhinitis and effectiveness of treatment with antihistamines of patients with and without COVID-19 (Medicine)

Rhinitis is defined as inflammation of the nasal mucosa. More than 200 million individuals worldwide experience this disease, which places a burden on society and requires huge costs for medical treatment and therapy.

Vasomotor rhinitis is a form of chronic non-allergic rhinitis which, as practice has shown, is common after getting over COVID-19, although literature offers no adequate studies in this area.

Sources in the literature suggest that the study of classical inflammatory markers does not allow us to distinguish healthy individuals from the ones with vasomotor rhinitis. Nitrogen oxide (NO) is an important mediator of processes in various biological mechanisms involved in the management of immune and inflammatory processes. (NO) has been identified in the upper and lower respiratory tract of humans, and clinical studies confirm its potential for use as a diagnostic marker for upper and lower respiratory tract diseases.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the local antihistamine medicine “Pallada-NS” in patients with and without COVID-19 infection, experiencing vasomotor rhinitis based on instrumental examinations of the nasal cavity (endoscopic, rhinomanomery), morphological (nasal smear for eosinophilia) and evaluation of the inflammatory marker (NO) of patients in both groups.

The study will be conducted on 50 volunteers (aged 18 to 65 years) (Group I - practically healthy; Group II - patients with vasomotor rhinitis with no prior COVID-19 disease; Group III - patients with vasomotor rhinitis with having recuperated from COVID-19 in the last 6 months.

Patients with vasomotor rhinitis will be treated with “Pallada NS” 2 sprays 2 times a day for 10 days.

The study will clarify the peculiarities of pathogenesis of vasomotor rhinitis in patients with prior COVID-19 history and without COVID-19, and evaluate the effectiveness of local intranasal antihistamine spray. Patients with or without COVID-19 history will be provided with recommendations for managing the disease.

The partner organization of SEU in this research project is the Institute of Physiology.

  • Applied Research in Business Law (Interdisciplinary: Business Administration, Law)

The project involves a range of 11-month interdisciplinary activities aimed at raising the legal awareness of representatives of business, economics, management, tourism and other related fields, bringing together legal and business circles, identifying legal challenges businesses are facing, spawning intellectual resources through interdisciplinary research designed for educational purposes. In addition, a considerable attention will be paid to developing intensive cooperation between SEU and the institutions involved in the project, promoting the entry of SEU into the new market and to raise the level of awareness about the university.

The project aims to solve the following issue of the minimal activity level of the academic staff and students of the Faculty of Business Administration in the field of Business Law, and measures to be taken to enhance it due to its great importance and necessity.

A number of scientific activities are planned within the project, namely:

  • Survey of business circles on the need for knowledge of relevant legal regulations;
  • Holding a business law symposium;
  • Conducting a competition for business law articles;
  • Organizing the International Summer School of Business Law;
  • Publication of collections of business law articles;
  • Organizing a student conference on business law;
  • Publishing materials for symposiums, article competitions and conferences;
  • Organize several online forums during the project to facilitate the implementation of the project objectives’
  • Publication of an auxiliary manual.

The project also entails various PR activities and seeking partners at the national and international levels with a view to further cooperation.

The project partners are various representatives of business and civil society, including the Civil Development Agency (CIDA).

  • Three-day training for the development of knowledge and skills required for the preparation of a scientific research grant application (interdisciplinary)

This course aims to develop the skills needed to prepare a research project grant application so that subsequent researchers can prepare compelling, high quality and successful proposals.

The training content is structured to cover all the important issues necessary for a properly composed grant application. This includes planning, grant application writing, composition structure and style, as well as partnership, budgeting.

The course is interactive and combines modern principles of adult learning, practical work and structured discussion.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be better able to draw up and submit a successful scientific research project application for funding.

  • Carrying out fundamental scientific research in the field of "Constitutional control and legal proceedings" and producing a relevant complex paper

The project aims to produce a comprehensive and scientifically processed complex paper that will be important not only for students but also for lecturers, scientists and practicing lawyers working in the field. The aim of the paper is to provide stakeholders with systematic knowledge on the following key topics: the essence of constitutional control, models and development; legal status and organization of the Constitutional Court; powers of the Constitutional Court; constitutional litigation, its principles and stages; acts of the Constitutional Court, their content and legal consequences. The paper should lead the student to developing practical skills necessary for filing a constitutional claim, the position of a court friend (amicus), drafting acts of the Constitutional Court, and constitutional proceedings.

  • Young Researchers Articles Competition (Interdisciplinary)

The competition has been announced within the framework of the bilateral cooperation of the “European Integration Research Group” between Georgian National University SEU and Lazarski University (Poland) and aims to contribute to encouraging scientif ic debates on European integration. The three winners of the competition will be awarded cash prizes, and the selected papers will be published in the scientific journal "SEU and Science" of Georgian National University or in the journal "Economics and Political Thought" of the Faculty of Economics and Management of Lazarski University.

  • Publication of an article by SEU professors in a Polish top-ranking journal

Investing in the process of introducing sustainable agriculture by the government is seen as a powerful mechanism to encourage long-term growth in agriculture. The article discusses and analyzes the impact of the project "Plant the Future" in Georgia. The project provides funding for potential beneficiaries in the process of introducing sustainable crops. Five criteria were used for the analysis: relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability. SEU financially supports the publication of this article in a top-ranking Polish scientific journal.
