‘Scientific Research into the Rights of Ethnic and Religious Minorities’ by Tamar Avaliani

To this day, no substantial literature on the rights of minorities is available in Georgian, obstructing the students to study the subject in more details. No major scientific research has ever been made into the rights of minorities considering the Georgian reality. Accordingly, this research serves to facilitate the development of justice in human rights and its scientific exploration. Under the research, both the theoretical framework and court practice will be analyzed, as well as the domestic and international instruments for protecting the rights of minorities. The research is designed to contribute not only to the teaching/learning arrangement but the development of justice in human rights in a scientific light, as well as embracing multiculturalism and interculturalism by academia. Appropriately, a journal (book) will be compiled, evaluating the standards and mechanisms for protecting the rights of ethnic and religious minorities. The research target group will include students, members of scientific circles, industry experts, civil rights activists, journalists and practicing lawyers, with the ability to put the mechanisms for protecting the rights of minorities into practice.

‘A Guidebook to Academic Writing’ by Ina Shanava

The ability to write is one of the major determinants of academic success, challenging the students of modern universities to grasp it. Composing papers in agreement with academic integrity and standards is a key component in academic pursuit, making it otherwise impossible to generate new knowledge or promote professional development.

The concepts regarding the style and format, offered by textbooks on scientific writing, could possibly include the specifics required by a particular discipline, making the author face the dilemma about whether to embrace the personal or university/faculty-initiated style. The differences, in its turn, markedly undermine the principle of integrity of academic disciplines. The aim of the project is to develop a guidebook to academic writing, based on a common strategy and a single methodological vision. It would be an invaluable opportunity for the students of Georgian National University SEU to grasp, advance and build on the basics of academic writing, being an integral part of academic success.

Scientific activity is a complex process and the essence of compiling this guidebook lies behind the coordination of teaching academic writing, ensuring the implementation of collective approaches, plagiarism prevention and the facilitation of developing the academic skills to enable the students to compose their academic papers in line with the determinants and standards of academic integrity.

‘A European Green Deal and its Political, Legal and Economic impact on Georgia’ by Irakli Samkharadze, head of Center for European Integration Research

Reforming the Georgian legislation and introducing the regulatory standards, based on the sound market economy principles, is a tough but irreversible undertaking. In order to upgrade the outdated legislation, the so-called ‘changes in perception’ and successive measures must be set in motion. In recent years, the majority of these reforms are associated with the cooperation between Georgia and the European Union (EU) as well as the alteration of the Georgian legislation under the European jurisprudence. Throughout this process, both direct and indirect aspects of sustainable development goals, eco-friendly energy sources, the advancement of the policy on climate change and other similar issues, are getting increasingly noticeable.

It is noteworthy that these processes coincide with the recently adopted so-called ‘European Green Deal’, being the fresh EU de-carbonization plan and anticipating the climate-neutral European continent by 2050. Due to its huge proportions, the ‘Green Deal’ seems to be not only an ordinary eco-friendly undertaking but the entirely new European order based on eco-thinking, bound to have a huge impact on it neighbors, including Georgia.

Considering the increased public and scientific interest, this project involves a profound research analysis of the mentioned processes, initiating a two-day, interdisciplinary scientific conference at Georgian National University SEU and publication of the relevant results, leading to drawing conclusions on the political, legal and economic impact of the European ‘Green Deal’ on Georgia.

‘Learning Communication Strategies and Tactics within the Medical Discourse’ by Nana Nikolaishvili

This research involves a medical discourse; in particular, learning communication strategies and tactics within the medical discourse. Communication between a doctor and a patient is subject to active research. Along with the knowledge, it includes certain professional skills, based on the pragmatic linguistic aspects, discourse and specific cultural and socio-linguistic components of communication. Recently, profound changes occurred in the healthcare system, altering the communication patter between a doctor and a patient. The paternalistic model has been replaced by a poorly studied cooperative one. The exploration of the latter model requires the analysis of both cognitive and linguistic aspects, spanning the communication tactics, the strategies for conveying the information to the patient, feedback, well-thought decision-making, persuading the patient, etc. The mentioned aspects are extremely important in establishing an effective ‘doctor-patient’ communication, being a key feature of a modern doctor and pointing to his/her high professionalism with a direct impact on patent’s wellbeing.
