SEU HOSTED AN INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE TITLED “EUROPIAN GREENDEAL AND ITS POLITICAL, LEGAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT ON GEORGIA”

On February 10-11, the European Integration Research Center of Georgian National University SEU hosted an international scientific conference titled “European Green Deal and its Political, Legal and Economic Impact on Georgia”.

The conference has been the first attempt of accommodating the ambition and the processes related to the European Green Deal under the Georgian academic discourse.

Renowned European and Georgian experts were invited as speakers at the conference:

  • The conference was opened by Anna Phirtskhalashvili - Doctor of Law, Professor, Vice-Rector of the Georgian National University SEU in the field of research and Goga Buchashvili, Doctor Assoc. Professor Georgian National University Vice-Rector for Administration at SEU;
  • Irakli Samkharadze – Doctor of Law, Associated Professor at SEU;
  • Kurt Deketelaere – Professor KU Leuven, Secretary General of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and Chairman of Sustainability College Burges;
  • Matteo Fermeglia – Doctor of Law, Researcher in Environmental and Administrative Law at the University of Hasselt, Belgium;
  • Markus C. Kerber, German Expert, Founder of the Europolis, Professor at Technology University of Berlin (TU Berlin);
  • Ketevan Vardosanidze - Visiting Lecturer at SEU, Researcher at the University of Cologne, who discussed Georgia's climate change policy;
  • Giorgi Kharshiladze - Invited Lecturer at SEU, spoke on the economic aspects of the Green Agreement;
  • Georgian Technical University Assoc. Professors Ketevan Vezirishvili-Nozadze, Elene Pantskhava and doctoral student Tamar Kanashvili. They talked about the impact of the Green Agreement on the Georgian energy sector;
  • Giorgi Razmadze - Shota Rustaveli State University of Theater and Film on the impact of the Green Movement from a completely different angle and discussed the principles of environmentally friendly cinema and a just society;
  • Ketevan Lotaria - Assoc. Professor Shota Meskhia at Zugdidi University. She shared the results of a survey on the consumption of green products on the example of the population of Zugdidi and Kutaisi.

The conference was attended by the professors from Lazarski University, Poland: Martin Dahl, Karol Jene, Anastasia Menshikova, Irina Burchenko and Karol Strzala. 

The following topics have been discussed during the conference:

  • Green Deal in the European Perspective: EU Climate Law & Fit for 55 Package;
  • Making the European Green Deal Work: The Governance Regulation Between EU’s Ambition and Member States Constraints;
  • European Green Deal within EU-Georgia Partnership and Cooperation Framework: Risks, Opportunities and Visions;
  • Georgian Climate Change Policy in the Prism of the European Green Deal;
  • The role of the European Green Agreement on Georgia 's energy sector, its challenges and future prospects;
  • Analysis of green product consumption statistics by the population of Zugdidi and Kutaisi;
  • Principles of Environmentalist Film and Fair Society.

The conference was held in hybrid mode, both through the Zoom platform and the attendees from the audience in analog.
